Wilhelm received the first name Philipp, but later called himself exclusively Wilhelm von Forbach or from 1775 Wilhelm von Zweybrücken.

His parents were the Wittelsbach Duke Christian IV of Pfalz-Zweibrücken and his morganatic wife , the former dancer Maria Anna Camasse , later Countess von Forbach. According to a decree issued by the father on March 30, 1775, the children were given the noble name von Zweybrücken . Wilhelm had five siblings, including the older brother Christian von Zweybrücken (1752-1817). In 1782 the King of France made him viscount of his country; Count Palatine Karl II. August awarded him the title of baron on January 31, 1792.

Wilhelm joined the French foreign regiment "Royal Deux-Ponts" (Königliches Zweibrücken) founded by his father in 1757 , in which his brother Christian also served. In the auxiliary corps of General Rochambeau both fought with their regiment on the side of the USA in 1781 in the American War of Independence ; especially in the battle of Yorktown . Wilhelm von Zweybrücken became the holder of the Cincinnati Order in this context .

After the outbreak of the French Revolution , the baron transferred to the Bavarian service , where he last held the rank of general and was captain general of the Hartschier bodyguard. He died in Munich in 1807 and was buried under the arcades of the old south cemetery.

Marriage and family

Wilhelm von Zweybrücken married Martine-Adelaide de Polastron (1760–1795), half-sister of the court lady Yolande Martine Gabrielle de Polastron, duchesse de Polignac , and the aunt of her son, the French Prime Minister Jules de Polignac , in 1780 .
