Historically, the captain general was referred to as:
- In the former Republic of Venice, the commander-in-chief , appointed only in the event of a war , especially of the fleet ( Capitan General da Mar )
- In pre-revolutionary France, the captain général was not a military rank, but a military-political position
- in Prussia the commander of the castle and bodyguards
- in Bavaria the commander of the Hartschiere
- in older sources the commander-in-chief of an army (also general captain ), see field captain
- in the Dutch Republic of the commander of the Territorial Army as a captain general, was Kapitein-generaal referred
