Karl Lohmeyer (born January 21, 1878 in Saarbrücken ; † November 8, 1957 there ) was a German art historian .

Life

Lohmeyer's father Carl came from a family of textile manufacturers in Wuppertal , which is why Karl jun. After graduating from high school in Saarbrücken in 1897, commercial training began in Barmen . After one year of voluntary military service , he spent several years abroad and a. to Geneva and Naples , where he was able to deepen his already existing interests in art history. In 1906 he settled as a merchant in Heidelberg down, but studied the way art history , history and folklore at the local university .

In 1912 Lohmeyer was appointed the first full-time director of the municipal art and antiquities collection on the history of Heidelberg and the Palatinate in Heidelberg. Through numerous exhibitions and the publication of relevant works, he increased the importance of the museum considerably, which in 1921 was named Kurpfälzisches Museum der Stadt Heidelberg at Lohmeyer's suggestion .

In 1931 Lohmeyer went into early retirement, but held the office of museum director on an honorary basis until 1934. He then moved back to Saarbrücken, where he devoted himself to research into folklore and art history in this region. The Saarland University appointed him its first honorary doctorate . On the occasion of his 75th birthday, the city of Saarbrücken granted him honorary citizenship .

Karl Lohmeyer has made a particular contribution to rediscovering the “Heidelberg Baroquepainting from the time of Johann Wilhelm and the “Heidelberg Romanticism ” with painters such as Carl Rottmann , Karl Philipp Fohr , Ernst Fries and Bernhard Fries .

Lohmeyer is also considered to be the rediscoverer of the Saarbrücken baroque master builder Friedrich Joachim Stengel , on whom he published his first publication in 1908 and a monograph that is still considered a standard work in 1911 . His edition of Balthasar Neumann's letters, published between 1911 and 1921, was also epoch-making because it sparked a long-lasting discussion about the planning process for the Würzburg residence .

In addition, in 1932 Lohmeyer was the first to recognize the abilities of the long-time Mainz bailiff of Lohr am Main , Philipp Christoph von und zu Erthal (1689–1748), as a "court cavalier architect" and described them in a fundamental essay. In this capacity the Mainz bailiff u. a. also included in the planning of the Würzburg residence.

Lohmeyer took part in the planning of his parents' house, the Nussberger Hof in Saarbrücken. later he lived in the house himself and amassed an extensive art collection there.
