from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magdalena Katharina von Pfalz-Zweibrücken (born April 26, 1607 in Zweibrücken , † January 20, 1648 in Strasbourg ) was a Countess Palatine of Zweibrücken and by marriage Duchess and Countess Palatine of Birkenfeld .

Life

Magdalena Katharina was the only child of the Duke and Count Palatine Johann II of Zweibrücken (1584-1635) from his first marriage to Cathérine (1578-1607), daughter of René II. De Rohan , Viscount de Rohan and Comte de Porhoët . From her father's second marriage, she had seven half-siblings, of which the eldest half-brother, Friedrich , inherited her father as Count Palatinate and Duke of Pfalz-Zweibrücken.

On November 14, 1630, she married Duke and Count Palatine Christian I of Birkenfeld (1598–1654) in Zweibrücken . As a dowry, Magdalena Katharina brought her husband the rule of Bischweiler in Alsace into the marriage. The couple initially lived in a wing of Birkenfeld Castle. Christian I had a palace built in Bischweiler, where the family later resided. Bischweiler was completely destroyed in the turmoil of the Thirty Years War in 1635.

Magdalena Katharina died in exile in Strasbourg and is buried in the Reformed parish church in Bischweiler.
