TestDisk is a command line utility for data recovery on disks - partitions .
It is developed by Christophe Grenier in the C programming language and distributed as free software also in the source code under the conditions of version 2 or higher of the GNU General Public License (GPL) in a set with the PhotoRec carving software . In all of the more popular Linux distributions , it can be installed directly from the standard package sources using the package manager .

Supported file systems
TestDisk recognizes the following types of partition tables :
- Apple Partition Map
- GUID Partition Table
- PC / Intel partition table in the master boot record
- Solaris disklabel
- Xbox FATX
It can also handle unpartitioned disks.
Partition recovery
TestDisk requires the BIOS or an operating system to read the hard disk. TestDisk can
- restore deleted partitions
- Restore partition tables
- recreate the master boot record (MBR)
TestDisk examines the structure and integrity of a hard drive. It then looks for partitions not listed in the MBR. The following file systems are recognized:
- Be File System ( BeOS )
- BSD disklabel
- CramFS , Compressed File System
- DOS / Windows FAT 12, 16 and 32
- Windows exFAT
- HFS , HFS + and HFSX, Hierarchical File System
- JFS , IBM's Journaled File System

- Linux soft RAID (RAID 1, RAID 4, RAID 5, RAID 6)
- Linux swap (version 1 and 2)
- LVM and LVM2, Linux
- Novell Storage Services (NSS)
- NTFS (Windows NT)
- ReiserFS 3.5, 3.6 and 4
- Sun Solaris i386 disklabel
- Unix File System UFS and UFS2 (Sun, BSD ...)
- XFS , SGI's Journaled File System
