The Window Maker (short wmaker ) is written by Alfredo Kojima window manager for the X Window System .

The design is based on OPENSTEP and is intended as an improvement to AfterStep . It has a functional appearance with extensive configuration options with a low RAM and CPU load.

Window Maker is the preferred window manager for GNUstep , although Window Maker itself uses WINGs ("WINGs is not GNUstep").

Also KDE - and Gnome applications can run under Window Maker. If these programs use dock icons, they may not work properly because Window Maker does not have a control bar (system tray).

dock

Window Maker has taken over the dock known from NextStep . Frequently required programs and so-called dock apps (small dockable applications such as clock, volume control) can be stored on the dock. These are the same on all virtual workspaces.

Clip

Regularly used applications can also be attached to the so-called clip. However, these can differ depending on the active workspace. The clip is also used to switch between the virtual workspaces.

menu

Right-click on the background to activate the menu. This menu can be completely adapted to your needs.

WPrefs

This configuration program can be used to set the appearance and behavior of Window Maker. For example, you can define key combinations, for example to maximize the active window or to quickly start a terminal. The menu can also be easily compiled using drag and drop .
