XChat is a free , graphical IRC client for Linux , Unix derivatives and Windows . For macOS there is X-Chat Aqua with its own user interface and the XChat engine.

XChat has an IRC client AmIRC for the Amiga modeled GTK2 -surface, plug-in -Support and customization options (program libraries and scripts ) using C / C ++ , Lisp , Perl , Python , Ruby , Tcl , xcdscript ( JavaScript ) .

The author Peter Zelezny sells the Windows version from version 2.4.0 onwards only as shareware due to the effort involved in Windows porting , but at the same time publishes the source code under the GPL . However, this contains a reduced or restricted range of functions compared to the shareware version and is updated less often. Nevertheless, various unofficial free versions for Windows have emerged from it again and again. The external derivative X-Chat Aqua is available for macOS , but has not been further developed since 2006.

No update has been published for the program since 2010, but no discontinuation of the project has ever been announced. X-Chat was further developed by independent, free developers based on the published source code. This resulted in the HexChat and Silverex projects . The Silverex project has been discontinued by the developer.
