HexChat is a free IRC client based on XChat . HexChat has a graphical user interface and is available for the macOS , Linux and Windows operating systems. The version for macOS has not been further developed since the end of 2014 (last version 2.10.2). The program is available in 53 languages.

Due to the unofficial setting and the disclosure of the source code of XChat, Berke Viktor founded the HexChat project in 2009, on which a total of eleven developers are working. Since then, the program has been further developed in many parts and offers interfaces for plugins that can be written in the programming languages Perl and Python . This enables extensive adjustments to be made in the program.

HexChat supports all common extensions in the IRC area. These include DCC chat / transfer, SASL and X.509 -based registrations, user-defined CTCP messages, proxies , spell checking, highlighting and design adaptation.
