UNetbootin stands for Universal Netboot Installer and is a free program that allows a Linux - or BSD - Distribution on computers without CD - or DVD - drive , for example via a USB - removable drive , installed can be.

features

It supports a variety of operating systems, such as Ubuntu , Fedora and Gentoo , which the program can download and set up independently in the background. It is also possible to access an ISO memory image of an installation medium of any Linux distribution that is already on a hard drive .

In addition to the installation for Unix-like operating systems , the program is also suitable for creating portable direct start systems . The installation medium can for example be a USB stick or a partition on the same computer.

When installing on a hard drive partition, in addition to an existing (possibly also currently running) system, UNetbootin can use an existing GRUB or the Windows start program ( ntldr or bootmgr ) to make the newly set up system bootable. Systems installed with UNetbootin can in turn be used as installation systems for an operating system.

Availability

UNetbootin is distributed as free software also in source code under the conditions of version 2 or higher of the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is available in a portable Windows and a Linux version. It can be installed directly from the standard package sources on many popular Linux distributions.

With FUSBi, there was a spin-off that specialized in operating systems that had been approved by the Free Software Foundation as free of proprietary residual components .
