Dominik Blum

Dominik Blum (born September 24, 1964 in Adliswil ) is a Swiss musician ( piano , synthesizer , organ ) and conductor . His artistic interests range from classical repertoire and contemporary music to electro-acoustic and new improvisational music .

Live and act

Blum made his first musical experiences in the field of (hard) rock and punk music and only received classical piano lessons afterwards (from the age of twelve). At the age of eighteen he made his first public appearance as a conductor. Between 1984 and 1987 he studied piano at the Winterthur Conservatory ; In 1990 he obtained the SMPV concert qualification diploma from Urs Peter Schneider in Bern . He also studied choir and ensemble conducting with Karl Scheuber in Zurich. At that time he conducted world premieres of various Swiss composers with the ensemble für neue musik zurich , played world premieres as a pianist and also made recordings for Radio DRS . In 1988 he performed the spatial music cantiones de circulo gyrante in Perugia with Karl Scheuber . In 1991 he interpreted the Prometheus by Alexander Scriabin with the Basel Sinfonietta and in 1993 the Oiseaux exotiques by Olivier Messiaen .

In 1995 he founded the crossover trio Steamboat Switzerland with Marino Pliakas and Lucas Niggli . He has since toured Europe and North America with the ensemble. In 1995/96 he attended the International Workshop for Conductors in Zlín with Kirk Trevor and Tsung Yeh as well as interpretation courses with Karl-Heinz Stockhausen and György Kurtág . In 1997/98 he made guest appearances with Ensemble Zurich in Poland, Ukraine, Russia and Azerbaijan. In 1998 he gave concerts with the violinist Katharina Schamböck in Argentina. In 1999 he performed Iwan Wyschnegradsky's Acte choregraphique with students from the Zurich University of the Arts .

In 2000 he played solo piano works by the Swiss composer Hermann Meier . In 2002 he was on concert tour in Macedonia and Kosovo with the flautist Boris Previsic, and since 2003 in a duo with the Georgian pianist Tamriko Kordzaia . Musical partners are also the saxophonist Raphael Camenisch and the pianist Tamriko Kordzaia. Blum's other projects are the Raving Song System and, since 2005, the Noise - Grind trio AZEOTROP. In 2019 he plays with Marino Pliakas and Lucas Niggli in the Trio Steamboat Switzerland .

Prizes and awards

In 1998, Blum was awarded the City of Winterthur Prize and in 2001 the Culture Prize of the Winterthur Cultural Foundation.
