In contrast to fixed media, removable media enable them to be separated without data loss or the computer system crashing while it is in operation. Removable data carriers are used to exchange and archive digital data.

In modern personal computers , the hard drives that are permanently installed and connected to SATA can also be hot- plugged, which leads to an increasing softening of the boundaries between removable storage media and permanently installed media. On older computers, disconnecting them while they are in use, such as a hard drive connected to IDE , can lead to a serious system failure.
