File Roller is the archive management program for the Gnome desktop environment . It represents a graphical front end to a variety of different data compression and packing programs for the command line (back end). The program is distributed as free software also in the source code under the conditions of version 2 or higher of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

history

The first release was version 0.1 on December 5, 2001. On May 4, 2002 it reached version 1.0. With version 1.101 it was ported to Gnome 2.

Functions

File Roller can display the contents of archives, extract files from them, delete files or add them, as well as create new archives. The functions are available via the main window via its buttons and menus as well as via drag and drop .

The contents of archives can be displayed directly from File Roller in a viewer window, in which it integrates a bonobo component of a corresponding viewer software installed in the system (if necessary, only a text viewer).

Using the corresponding command line programs, archive files in the formats 7z (no multi-part archives), tar , RAR , StuffIt , zip , compress , gzip , bzip, bzip2 , lzip , xz ARJ , LHA , LZO , zoo , JAR and ar as well as Debian- and RPM packages (the latter are read only) and ISO images (read only).
