Ark , formerly KZip , is a free packing program from the K Desktop Environment (part of the kdeutils package ) for the graphical management of archive files in a variety of formats . It represents a graphical front end to various data compression and packing programs for the command line (back end). The program is free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The program originally appeared as a KZip. On November 3rd, 1998 Ark 0.5 appeared as the first version under the new name. At that time still integrated with the KDE file manager, KFM, which changed on October 23, 2000 with the release of version 2 of KDE, in which Konqueror was introduced as the file manager.

Functions

Ark can display the contents of archives, extract files from them, delete files or add them as well as create new archives. The functions are available via the main window via its buttons and menus as well as via drag and drop or can also be used from other KDE programs such as Konqueror or Dolphin , in which it can be integrated as a KPart . For example, files can be packed and unpacked from Konqueror via the context menu.

Using the appropriate command line programs, it can handle archive files in the formats 7z , ar , RAR , zip , gzip , bzip, bzip2 , LHA , zoo and ar . The corresponding packing programs must be installed separately.
