Clonezilla is free software from the Taiwanese National Center for High Performance Computing (NCHC) for creating 1: 1 images of PC hard drives .
details
The program is designed for “cloning” uniform software configurations on multiple computers, e.g. B. in the corporate environment. The range of functions is comparable to that of commercial products such as Symantec's Norton Ghost or Acronis ' True Image and that of the free G4L .
Clonezilla Live
Clonezilla Live does not need to be installed, but is started "live" from a self-sufficient CD or a bootable USB stick . Using a text-based menu navigation , the user can copy a hard drive or individual partitions and restore them later. The partition or hard disk image is saved as a file on another data carrier (hard disk, USB stick, DVD). Internal and external hard drives as well as network access to storage media are supported, for example using NFS , SSH or Samba servers.
Clonezilla Server Edition
With Clonezilla SE, a large number of computers can be provided with an identical software configuration at the same time via a network. This version is used in conjunction with a DRBL server (Diskless Remote Boot in Linux).
features
For the actual copying process, Clonezilla uses various (free) programs:
- ntfsclone - for NTFS file systems
- drbl-winroll - toautomatically adjust thecomputer name, group membership and security identifier (SID) of cloned Windows systems
- Partclone - FAT , NTFS , ext2 / ext3 , ext4 , reiserfs , xfs , HFS Plus , UFS2 , VMFS from version 0.2.3
- Partimage - FAT , ext2 / ext3 , ReiserFS Version 3 , xfs , jfs
- dd - sector -by-sector copy for unsupported file systems
In the case of partitions with the file systems mentioned above, only occupied sectors of the hard disk are backed up. LVM2 on GNU / Linux is also supported. The images generated with ntfsclone or dd can be integrated (coll. Mounted ) in order to read out (or extract ) individual files from the images .
If the destination drive is larger than the source drive to be transferred, the partition on the destination drive must be enlarged after the transfer if the entire hard disk space is to be used. In this case it is advisable to use e.g. B. to work with Parted Magic , which has both Clonezilla and the “partitioning tool” GParted on board.
advantages
Compared to the individual solutions (ntfsclone, Partimage, dd), Clonezilla Live offers a uniform and bundled surface for various file systems. Similar to purchased software products, it enables network access that is not possible with the individual solutions mentioned, or only possible indirectly. In addition, the best-known images are compressed directly if necessary and divided into files of a certain size.
