G4L (formerly an acronym for Ghost for Linux ) is a free software for Linux systems with which the data contents of entire hard disks and partitions backed up can be. The software is made available under the Sourceforge.net development management system under the GPL .
Differences from Norton Ghost
- G4L copies entire disks or partitions bit by bit, whereas Norton Ghost recognizes the file system and copies the files on it individually. This can have a negative effect on the speed of the G4L, because the unused space of a partition is also copied, but G4L does not need any file system drivers for this, so it can copy all file systems.
- G4L can also upload the images to an FTP server . This is done either via the menu item "Raw Mode" → "Network Use" or via "File mode" → "Client / Server Mode".
Dispute over G4U
The source code of G4L showed similarities with that of the G4U (Ghost for UNIX) program, from which the G4U author concluded that G4L violated G4U's BSD license . He explains the reasons for this on his website. However, the author of G4U has not taken any legal action.
In the opinion of the current developer of G4L, however, the G4L project has now developed so much that these similarities have largely disappeared. Nevertheless, when the current version is started, a note about possible similarities to G4U is displayed.
