The Vyatta Open Router Firmware ( Vyatta OFR or OFR for short ) was a Linux distribution based on Debian that specialized in router / firewall / gateway security functions .

Brief description

Vyatta OFR is like other router distributions as a standalone server - operating system to understand. It is first started on a PC via a live boot CD and can later be accessed via the console interface, for example. B. Hard disk can be permanently installed. After a few basic settings, the installation begins, partitioning the hard drive and transferring the files. Initially, a relatively slim console version is available and the network is not configured. In order to be able to operate the router without a keyboard and monitor, at least one network interface must be configured.

The main task of Vyatta-OFR is to map the essential features of a router. Due to the flexible use of a Debian as the operating system base, almost all features of the x86 architecture can be used.

The routing engine is essentially configured in Configure-Edit-Mode, in which all changes are written to a config file. The specialty is that the changes do not become active immediately, but the new configuration is first activated with a dedicated "commit" command, so the configuration to be committed can be checked again before activation. Then, similar to Cisco, the configuration must also be written to the permanent data memory (e.g. hard drive) so that the configuration is reboot-proof. In addition to the configuration mode, the underlying Debian Linux is fully accessible. The system is accessed via a serial console, via the console screen, via SSH, or the WebGUI that is also included.

Business model

OFR is the American Vyatta Inc. from Belmont, California, and a community of volunteer developers and helpers. Vyatta's business model is primarily to provide support and training for the Vyatta OFR. In addition, two hardware routers are currently available and it is possible to order Dell computers configured as routers via Vyatta. With version 6.0 Vyatta switched to a core model, whereby Vyatta Core corresponds to the previous Community Edition, additional functions can be purchased in packages.

Vyatta Core is licensed under the GPL .

The company Vyatta Inc. was taken over in Nov. 2012 by Brocade Communications Systems .

In order to further develop the core of Vyatta on a free basis without the help of Brocade, a community came together which created the fork called " VyOS ". Version 1.0, codenamed Hydrogen, was released on Dec. 22, 2013.

In June 2017 Brocade sold Vyatta Software Technology to AT&T Communications.

Functional scope, features Version 4.0

Version 4.0 includes the following main functions:

Version 5.0

In version 5, some new features have been integrated into the distribution:

  • WebGUI
  • OpenVPN support
  • Intrusion protection, URL filtering
  • DNS forwarding, DynDNS support, etc. a.

Version 6.0

  • IPv6 support for routing and firewall
  • Extension to include time and zone-based firewall rules
  • Switch to an open core model, with Vyatta Core roughly equivalent to the previous Community Edition

Comparison with other router distributions

  • Unlike OpenWrt , OFR runs exclusively on x86 hardware. DSL and WLAN routers designed as embedded devices are thus left out.
  • In contrast to fli4l , OFR is configured "online", ie during operation.
  • XORP was started a little earlier than Vyatta OFR, but it also seems a little less topical.
