Whonix is a Debian -based Linux distribution that values privacy, security and anonymity on the Internet. To achieve this, Whonix relies in particular on the use of the Tor network .

construction

The operating system consists of two virtual machines , a workstation and a gateway for the Tor network. All network communication is routed through the Tor network. Updates are received via gate with the Debian get apt - Package Manager recorded. VirtualBox , Qubes OS and KVM are supported as virtualization software . The desktop environment is Xfce . Installers are offered for Windows , Linux , macOS and Qubes OS .

When the respective system is started in the virtual environment, a check is made to ensure that it is up to date and that the time and date are correct. The check of updates and the correct connection to the Tor network can be carried out at any time using the whonixcheck program.

The Whonix Gateway virtual machine is responsible for the connection to the Tor network and has two virtual interfaces. The gateway ensures that only network traffic takes place over the Tor network.

The Whonix Workstation virtual machine is then provided for the actual use of the operating system, such as surfing, using messengers, etc. The workstation only knows the gateway as a communication partner and only has a private IPv4 address for external communication. This construction is intended to exclude the possibility that the public IP address of the connection can be found out even if the workstation is compromised , for example by a malicious program. The forced communication via the gateway and thus via the Tor network should also prevent DNS leaks .

Whonix also includes many privacy tools. This includes programs for encryption / signing using PGP , a Jabber client and the Tor browser .

A big innovation in 2019 was the release of a virtual appliance for VirtualBox, which automatically integrates both gateway and workstation as an appliance in a virtualized environment under VirtualBox. So far, the appliance to be integrated consisted of two parts of appliances that were to be inserted separately, the Whonix gateway and the Whonix workstation . According to the developers, the merger of the two was done for reasons of better setup and usability.

In addition, the Whonix distribution is now a rolling release distribution. Further innovations and changes to version 15.x can be found in the changelog and the blog on the website.

The Linux distribution Tails pursues similar approaches of Linux-based operating systems with connection to the Tor network .

documentation

The documentation contains a very large number of instructions and advice for maintaining privacy on the Internet. In addition, there are also notes on the use of various security tools. These also include instructions for using I2P and Freenet over the Tor network.
