The Jabber Instant Messenger ( Jabber English [ ˈdʒæbə (ɹ) ]: "(therefore-) babble") was the first instant messaging client for the XMPP protocol . It was invented by Jeremie Miller in 1998 . The messenger itself has not been offered for several years. Jabber currently still functions as an XMPP service and an important node in the XMPP network, but refers to alternative programs for the available clients.

Range of functions

The Jabber Instant Messenger had functions similar to the ICQ Instant Messenger . In addition to chatting for two, the service also offered the user communication with several participants.

Another function of the Jabber Instant Messenger was the possibility of direct file exchange with other people.

A special feature of the messenger for the user was the possibility of establishing contact with users of the messengers ICQ, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger via the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) implemented by Jabber for the first time .

In the contact management, the user could import contact lists from other messenger programs and organize contacts in groups. The software made it possible to block individual conversation partners.
