The slate gray astrild ( Euschistospiza cinereovinacea ) is an African species from the finch family . Two subspecies are included in the species.
description
The slate gray Astrild reaches a body length of about 11.5 centimeters. The male is slate gray to brownish slate gray. The rear rump and the upper tail-coverts are dark red, the tail is black. On the sides of the body it is dark wine-red with small, white droplet spots. The females are similar to the males, but have a lighter gray throat and are less dark on the underside of the body.
distribution and habitat
The slate gray astrild occurs in Africa in two isolated populations. The nominate form E. c. cinereovinacea lives in the highlands of Angola , the subspecies E. c. Graueri in the highlands on the west bank of Lake Tanganyika . The latter distribution area extends over Burundi and Rwanda to the southwest of Uganda . Its altitude distribution extends to altitudes of 2,200 meters. It occurs there in the highland savannah grass interspersed with bushes. His way of life has so far not been adequately studied. The very shy bird lives mostly in pairs or in small groups of three to four birds.
attitude
Slate-gray Astrildas first came to Europe in the 1960s. The first breeding succeeded in 1965. There is no detailed husbandry experience for this species. It is assumed that, similar to the Dybowskiastrilden belonging to the same genus, slate-gray Astrilde need well-structured aviaries equipped with plants for their well-being.
