The Dybowskiastrild ( Euschistospiza dybowskii ), also called Dybowski's drip-aweed , is a species of bird from the finch family (Estrildidae). Its distribution area extends from Senegal and Sierra Leone to the Congo , Sudan and Central Africa . No subspecies are distinguished for this species.

description

Dybowskiastrilde reach a body length of about eleven to twelve centimeters. The plumage is predominantly slate gray. The lower abdomen is black and white cuckoo ; On the upper side of the body runs a dark red band that continues to the tail feathers. Females are pinnate similar to males, but a little lighter. The song of the Dybowskiastrilde is melodic, chirping and trilling. It is performed by both sexes.

Almost nothing is known about the brood biology from the field. The observations were made on kept birds. Dybowskiastrilde are free breeders who build their bowl nests in the bushes. They use dry grass, coconut fiber, moss and feathers as nesting material. The female lays between four and five eggs, which are incubated for 13 to 14 days. The nestlings have blackish skin. The downs on the head and back are gray. As is the case with many African finches, one species of widow bird is a breeding parasite of the Dybowskiastrild. In the case of this species, it is the Cameroon Atlas Widow .

Dybowskiastrilde are territorial and individual nisters. Her singing is varied and powerful. Since it contains sobbing trills and whistles and fluting tones, the song has been compared by ornithologists to both the nightingale and the blackbird .

attitude

Dybowskiastrilde were first introduced to Europe in 1959. They were then one of the fine finch species until the 1980s, which were only marketed sporadically and then in small numbers. Because of this rarity, among other things, it was one of the most sought-after birds in the bird trade. That has changed since then. Dybowskiastrilde are now bred regularly and sometimes over several generations. However, some of the birds on sale in the trade still come from imported birds, which it is not always easy to get used to because of the poor state of health in which the birds reach Europe. Familiar birds, however, are among the most enduring species of finch. Because of their attractive plumage and pleasant singing, Dybowskiastrilde are often kept as an ornamental bird. However, the male can become aggressive towards conspecifics and other birds with red feathering. This makes them very difficult to integrate into community aviaries. Aviaries with dense branches are the ideal way of housing for the well-being of the birds.

Etymology and history of research

The first description of the Dybowskiastrild was in 1892 by Émile Oustalet under the scientific name Lagonosticta Dybowskii . The type specimen came from the Kémo region and was collected by Jean Thadée Emmanuel Dybowski (1856–1928). Only later was it added to the genus Euschistospiza, newly created by Hans Edmund Wolters in 1943 . This name is a Greek word formed from "eu ευ " for "fine", "skhistos, skhizō σχιστος, σχιζω " for "split, split off" and "spiza σπιζα " for "finch". The species name is dedicated to its collector.
