Development history
Parrot is based on Debian 's test branch (Buster), with a custom Linux 4.19 kernel. It follows an ongoing update model . The desktop environment is the MATE Desktop Environment and the default display manager is LightDM .
Parrot OS is designed for use on devices with at least 256 MB RAM and is suitable for both 32-bit and 64-bit processors. Experimental versions for ARMv7 architectures are also available. It even offers an edition (both 32-bit and 64-bit) specially designed for servers to run cloud service penetration tests.
In June 2017 ParrotSec announced that they were considering switching from Debian to Devuan , largely due to issues with the highly controversial systemd .
On January 21, 2019, the Parrot Linux team stopped developing 32-bit ( i386 ) versions of all future operating systems.
Editions
In addition to a version aimed at pentesters and security researchers, ParrotSec also offers other versions.
Parrot Home is aimed at private users and is optimized for everyday use, but unlike Parrot Security OS, it does not have a large selection of security tools.
Parrot ARM is a special version for ARM -based systems such as the Raspberry Pi , the Orange PI or the Pine64. A Docker image is also available, which enables ParrotSec to be started in a Docker container .
