MATE is a free desktop environment for Unix systems such as B. Linux . MATE was created in 2011 as a spin-off from the Gnome 2 desktop environment . The name is derived from the mate plant ( Spanish yerba mate ).

history

After Gnome 2, Gnome 3 was developed and the operating concept was changed significantly. Many users wanted to keep the tried and tested operating mechanisms of Gnome 2, but Gnome 2 was no longer developed and no longer maintained with security developments. As a result of dissatisfaction with this, the MATE project emerged, whose contributors then adopted the Gnome 2 desktop environment.
