gedit (short for Gnome Editor ) is a UTF-8 compatible free text editor for the Gnome desktop environment . It builds on the Gnome and GTK + libraries. With support for the virtual file system gio in GLib , the Gnome help system and drag and drop with other Gnome programs, it integrates into the GNOME environment. Different files can be edited simultaneously in separate tabs .

The first version of the program appeared in April 1998. The aim was to provide a text editor for the Gnome project that had just started. The text editor is now also available for Windows users.

pluma is a fork of gedit. This took place in the course of the development of the MATE Desktop Environment , which is a fork of Gnome 2. The name “pluma” is the Latin word for “ pen ” and is based on its historical use as a writing instrument.

Functions

gedit allows already supplied by gtksourceview the syntax highlighting for C , C ++ , CSS , Java , HTML , XML , Python , Perl , PHP and a number of other programming and scripting languages. In addition, it is possible to create language definition files yourself using an XML -formatted file and to install those from third-party developers, for example for the Mediawiki Wikitext syntax.

A variety of plugins are provided by users and programmers , such as autocompletion for LaTeX documents or a Python shell. In February 2010 a plugin was developed that enables collaborative writing . It is based on the same program library as the text editor Gobby .

The editor gPHPEdit was created in 2003 on the basis of gedit, which specializes in HTML and CSS in addition to PHP .
