Metacity was the standard window manager of the Gnome desktop environment . It is pronounced with an emphasis on the second syllable (such as capacity ) and has nothing to do with “Über-Stadt” or the like.
The development of Metacity was started by Havoc Pennington , who published it under the GPL . Metacity was specially programmed for Gnome and is officially part of the Gnome project (it is not developed independently of it).
Before Metacity was introduced in Gnome 2.2, Gnome first used Enlightenment and then Sawfish as a window manager. Although Metacity is part of the Gnome project and designed to be integrated into it, it does not require Gnome to function and Gnome can be used with other window managers as well.
Metacity is currently no longer actively developed. From Gnome 3.0 onwards, mother will be used as the successor, but it is based on Metacity. The window managers Marco ( MATE ) and Muffin ( Cinnamon ) are also spin-offs from Metacity and can also use its designs .
Disagreements
Metacity's introduction as a standard window manager was controversial. In direct comparison to its predecessors, it offers few configuration options. In addition, the separation of the window manager from the system that provides the graphical user interface, on which the X Window System is actually based, is made unrecognizable through its integration into the desktop environment. Metacity is hardly mentioned by name in Gnome and the classic tasks of a window manager, such as key combinations and drawing the window frames, are "hidden" in the general settings. However, this is exactly in line with the philosophy underlying Metacity (and Gnome in general). The focus is on simple, intuitive usability and clarity. Its developer Havoc Pennington describes him as a "boring window manager for the adult in you".
Critics counter that Metacity has sacrificed the flexibility and control associated with Unix applications. This lack of flexibility has led to the development of projects such as Devil's Pie and Brightside, which lacked the functions of its predecessors ("matching windows" from Sawfish and "edge flipping" from Enlightenment) and now make these (and others) available again.
