Mother was originally developed by Intel for the Moblin platform. Intel took the window manager Metacity , which was used in Gnome 2 , as a basis and combined it with the Clutter program library in order to enable OpenGL -accelerated functions, which is where the name derives from the short form of "Metacity Clutter".
The combination with clutter enabled graphic effects and hardware acceleration .
Clutter and the mother plugin are mostly in JavaScript and C written.
Areas of application
Mutter is used in the Moblin successor MeeGo for netbooks , to which Mutter is the only window manager compatible. In addition, Mutter can be used in the other MeeGo variants that do not require special window managers.
Ubuntu's user interface - called Unity - also required Mutter, but newer versions are based on Compiz .
Mother is also used in the Gnome 3 desktop environment and requires it for Gnome Shell .
criticism
The deep integration of mother into the Gnome Shell is often seen as problematic, which makes it difficult to use a different window manager in Gnome 3.
