Thawte [ θɔːt ] is an internet security company based in Cape Town , South Africa .
The company was founded in 1995 by Mark Shuttleworth . In December 1999 it was bought by VeriSign . The acquisition for VeriSign shares was completed in January 2000. According to its own information, Thawte remained independent of VeriSign in day-to-day business.
Main business area
The main business of Thawte is the allocation of digital certificates for different purposes as so-called certification authority (English Certification Authority, CA ). There are server certificates ( SSL / TLS ) for example, web or email server issued. Thawte said it was the first company to issue such certificates outside of the United States.
Almost all modern e-mail clients such as Outlook ( Express ) or Thunderbird and web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Opera list this CA as trustworthy in their certificate database. Firefox, however, does not.
Trust network
Thawte also issued free email certificates where the identity of the certificate holder was verified through a trust network of volunteers, similar to CAcert.org . However, the Thawte Trust Network was retired on November 16, 2009. The independent certification body CAcert took over the majority of the participants in the Thawte trust network through a special program.
