Josef Neuwirth (born June 5, 1855 in Neugarten , Northern Bohemia , † April 25, 1934 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian. He is considered the most important corp historian in Austria.

Life

Neuwirth studied German , history , classical philology , art history and classical archeology at the Charles University from 1875 to 1878 . After passing the teaching examination in 1880, he worked as a high school professor until 1894 . He obtained his doctorate in 1882 as a Dr. phil. and was able to do his habilitation in art history in 1885 . From 1894 he taught as associate professor and from 1897 as full professor of art history at the German University in Prague . From 1899 until his retirement in 1926, he held the chair for general art history at the Vienna University of Technology . There he was also rector in the academic year 1903/04 . In 1905 he took over this position for the second time after his successor Ludwig von Tetmajer died a few months after taking office.

He was active in many areas of historical and art historical research. Neuwirth's importance as an art historian lay in his architectural history studies and in his conception of architectural history. He rejected a purely aesthetic approach and limited himself to the facts. As a university lecturer, his merit lay in building up the teaching apparatus for the subject of art history at the Vienna University of Technology and in creating the subject of monument preservation, a new subject for Austria . In his architectural history studies, his main interest was medieval architecture , with Bohemia in particular in the foreground of his investigations.
