The Gnome Terminal can be used as a terminal emulator on a graphical interface under Gnome, but also in other environments such as KDE . The advantage over real terminals is that its window can be dimensioned and positioned as desired.

Gnome Terminal is similar to xterm and has taken over many functions, such as displaying colors (with commands like ls --color = auto ) and interacting with the mouse . The latter is implemented with the help of ncurses . Newer versions can also open several terminals in the same window using tabs , similar to the KDE terminal emulation console .
