NixOS is a Linux distribution based on the Nix package manager . The distribution is based on the approach of declarative system configuration in order to allow reproducible and reliable system configuration and, as a result, smooth system updates.

history

NixOS started in 2003 as a research project by Eelco Dolstra. The aim was to explore a better way of dealing with typical problems with the delivery and installation of software . In 2015 the NixOS Foundation was founded to promote projects related to the NixOS ecosystem. NixOS is named in an analysis by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) in June 2017 as one of the 30 open source projects with the fastest development speed.

distribution

In June 2017, NixOS was ranked 73rd in the popularity index of the Distrowatch website . Web hosting providers and agencies as well as companies such as TeamViewer AG , HolidayCheck and organizations such as Mozilla use NixOS to operate web server infrastructure and to handle DevOps tasks . In October 2017 the second conference on Nix took place in Unterföhring near Munich .
