Ututo is a project from Argentina that publishes a Linux distribution and, based on it, develops software projects and carries out educational activities.

The Linux distribution, called Ututo GNU / Linux , has been driven mainly by Argentinian developers since 2000 , is based on Gentoo Linux and consists entirely of free software .

The name Ututo comes from a species of gecko that is widespread in Argentina .

Development history

The first version of Ututo was developed by Diego Saravia at the University of Salta in October 2000 . The goal was a Linux version that could be started completely from a CD ( live CD ). Ututo was one of the first distributions to achieve this goal.

In 2002 the Ututo-R project was started, a version of the operating system that aimed to function as a software router . Ututo-R has been installed in Argentina on several networks in government offices and schools, for example in Buenos Aires .

The version Ututo-e, a desktop variant, was launched in 2004. It was developed with the primary goal of offering a full-fledged operating system based on completely free software that can also run on older hardware, as is still often found in Argentina, especially as a result of the Argentina crisis .

The operating system has been called Ututo XS since 2005 because the newer versions have a completely new design, including a simple installation environment. The live CD version is also referred to under this name, but as Ututo XS Vivo (Spanish for live ).

further activities

In addition to the operating system, the Ututo project also developed various software projects based on it, including a system for operating a web radio and an Internet television station ( Ututo Free TV ), a supercomputer cluster based on Ututo XS, and software for operating an IPv6 network. At times the project also worked on a distribution of FreeBSD ( Ututo GNU / BSD ), which was discontinued.

Special features and characteristics

Ututo consists entirely of free software. This is noticeable, for example, in the fact that even well-known proprietary plugins such as Adobe Flash are being replaced by free alternatives such as Gnash . At least up to version XS 2006 there were disadvantages due to this strict ethical convention, which made themselves felt in compatibility and performance problems compared to other Linux distributions.

Ututo is one of the few distributions of Linux that provides a special version for different processor architectures. So there are z. B. Within the x86 versions, one for AMD processors and one for Intel's Pentium 4 . This allows the individual architectures to be better utilized.

As a further specialty, Ututo uses its own package management system called UTUTO-Get (now UGet) from version XS 2007 onwards , which can manage both Debian and RPM packages.

UTUTO-e and UTUTO XS are based on the Gnome desktop environment by default . As of version XS 2007, however, the alternative environments KDE , Fluxbox and IceWM are also supplied on the installation CD.

reception

The Ututo project was recognized as a project of national interest by the Argentine Chamber of Deputies in 2006.

The major Argentine newspapers Clarín , Página / 12 and La Capital reported on the Ututo project . In 2001, Wired magazine also devoted an article to Ututo.

The distribution gained international fame because it was used for a long time by Richard Stallman , founder of the GNU project, up to the development of gNewSense , and was recommended by the Free Software Foundation because it did not contain proprietary components.
