gNewSense is a GNU / Linux distribution based on Debian by the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The goal is a user-friendly operating system without proprietary software .

gNewSense is very strict about proprietary software.

history

The project was started in 2006 by Brian Brazil and Paul O'Malley. At that time it was still based on Ubuntu . From version 1.0, the FSF supported the project, among other things, it provided hardware for development. In 2011, when no new version was released for 2 years, DistroWatch classified the project as "dormant" (English for "dormant", "sleeping"). In September 2012 the status on Distrowatch was changed to “active” (English for “active”) and on August 6, 2013 the first version based directly on Debian came out. On July 23, 2019, the supervisor Sam Geeraerts announced on a mailing list that he had to withdraw from the project management due to time constraints. Taking care of - but outdated because on Debian 7 ( "Wheezy") - based repositories but he wanted to make sure. The project itself announced on its website that the FSF and Creative Commons employee Matt Lee would take over the supervision .
