Dream Linux is originally from Morphix derived modular Debian - Linux distribution for use in multimedia range. With MKDistro it provides a tool with which users can create their own Linux distributions. Dreamlinux can be burned as a live CD or operated on hard drives and USB mass storage devices . Version 1.0 was released in 2006. The last version 5.0 was released in January 2012, after which the distribution will no longer be continued.

MKDistro

The name Dreamlinux is not intended to herald the best of all linuxes. Rather, with Dreamlinux and MKDistro, the developers want to help users put together their own "Dreamlinux", save it as an ISO image and use and distribute it as a distribution.

MKDistro can be used to combine modules within the Morphix , Knoppix and Dreamlinux derivatives: Linux kernel , installation routines, graphical user interfaces and other open source components. If necessary and justifiable, software that does not fall under open source licenses can also be integrated.

With each version of Dreamlinux, the developers present their preferred combination of modules that they have put together with MKDistro from open source software. While the Morphix philosophy is maintained, Morphix services are increasingly being adopted by other software.

The Dreamlinux Multimedia Edition 2.2 from 2007 essentially consists of the 2.6.18 kernel with Morphix patch. The boot routine comes from Morphix, the packages from the Debian GNU / Linux "testing" version.

The Dreamlinux Desktop Edition 3.x uses a new architecture in which you can choose between Xfce and Gnome desktop when booting . The desktops are then subject to the same user settings and access the same applications.

The Xfce desktop reminded by integrating the Dock and menu bar at macOS . By the activated from Dream Linux 2.3 Beryl - or Compiz - window manager it can be used in three dimensions.

installation

Dreamlinux avoids or alleviates some of the earlier common problems with installing and booting a Linux distribution. For some systems, however, the Knoppix X11 configurator mkxf86config, which was included up to Dreamlinux Version 2.2, does not set the screen resolutions optimally. Determining the correct resolutions and correcting them using an editor in xorg.conf can be overwhelming for beginners. In newer versions the installation is smoother and less hardware dependent. However, adapting to a broad hardware base remains difficult for the small development team.

For ATI Radeon and nvidia cards that support 3D -capable application programs, Dreamlinux Multimedia Edition 2.2 offers drivers during the installation. Widescreen monitors are recognized automatically.

With the Easy Install System, non-Debian programs such as B. Install Google Earth , Picasa , Opera , Skype and audio and multimedia applications.

reception

Ben McGrath tested Dreamlinux Version 2.2 and judged mostly positive: While much of the software works like a dream, not all is perfect. [...] Nevertheless, the distribution itself looks good and functions well. The Mkdistro tool will be useful for users who want complete control of their systems, and the overall ease of installation and use Dreamlinux offers is good enough that the average user can download and install the distribution and jump right in.

JA Watson reported on Dreamlinux version 3.5 on ZDNet. I got interested in the new release of Dream Linux (3.5) because it is supposed to make it easy to create your own customized ISO boot image. He closes the report with the words: In conclusion, though, I would say again, I am just amazed at how well, and how easily, Dream Linux installed on this Mini-Note, after all the struggles with the other distributions I've had. More to come.

golem.de and Netzwelt reported on the fifth beta of version 4.0 of Dreamlinux.
