Geexbox ( proper spelling GeeXboX ) is a small multimedia live CD that enables the operation of an HTPC (Home Theater PC) and was designed for the playback of audio CDs , DVDs , VCDs as well as individual audio and video files.

The multimedia distribution can be started from a CD and is loaded into the main memory. The live CD can then be removed, for example to be able to insert an MP3 CD for playback. As a boot option there is also the option of installing Geexbox on the hard drive, booting from a USB stick or booting over the network ( PXE ).

The approximately 136 MB Linux distribution uses the XBMC to play multimedia files , which can play all common file formats.

MoviX is a similar development .
