Bodhi Linux is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu using the Moksha desktop environment .

Characteristics

The term " Bodhi " comes from the ancient Indian Sanskrit and means something like "awakening" or "enlightening".

According to the developer, Bodhi Linux starts with minimal hardware requirements of 128  MB RAM , 2.5 GB hard disk space , and a 300  MHz main processor . Bodhi uses desktop effects, but conserves hardware resources. An independent test showed that the GIMP started within 4.7 seconds under Bodhi Linux; under Ubuntu it took 11.1 seconds.

The tools specially written for Bodhi were written in the C programming language. In the meantime, however, the Moksha desktop environment is being used, which in turn is a spin-off from the Enlightenment project. " Moksha " is also a Sanskrit word and can be translated as "redemption" or "liberation".

Versions

The versioning scheme: The first number stands for a major release, the second number for a quarterly or kernel update and the third number only for a software update. The major release cycles are based on the Ubuntu LTS cycle (2 years).

Dissemination and attention

According to Distrowatch, Bodhi Linux was one of the 20 most interesting Linux distributions in mid / late 2012 - and with increasing interest. In mid-September 2012, Distrowatch listed Bodhi Linux in its ranking for the past six months in 16th place, ahead of such well-known distributions as Knoppix and Mandriva .

SourceForge reported about 20,000 downloads of Bodhi Linux per week in mid-September 2012. Two years later, it was about 10,000 downloads a week.

In September 2014 it was announced that Jeff Hodgeland wanted to transfer further development to other hands due to lack of time. He denied rumors that Bodhi should be hired.
