SliTaz is an independently developed, minimal Linux distribution with a complete graphical user interface and its own package system. SliTaz is one of the smallest Linux distributions and is one of the smallest modern operating systems with a complete graphical user interface. The ISO image has a size of approx. 40  MiB . The name is an acronym for S imple L ight I ncredible T emporary A utonomous Z one .

features

SliTaz can be booted as a live system or it is installed on the hard drive. During the boot process, the entire system is loaded into the RAM . If the system was booted from a CD-ROM , it can be removed after booting; the drive is then available again. Since the system runs in RAM, you can work smoothly even on old computers, programs start quickly even on PCs with slow hard drives. SliTaz offers a complete and fast graphical user interface with minimal hardware requirements.

Hardware requirements

The current version requires at least 256 MiB RAM. Installed on the hard drive, the system occupies approx. 100 MiB. For older computers that do not meet the minimum requirements, especially with regard to the capacity of the RAM, there is a smaller version, the Loram version. There is the Loram version for systems from 24 MiB or 128 MiB RAM on which the CD-ROM cannot be ejected.

practice

In order to obtain full functionality when operating from a CD-ROM, personal documents and settings can be saved on external media such as a USB stick or a hard drive.

SliTaz can be expanded using its own package system. Software can be easily managed via the package manager Tazpkg, which now has a GUI . More than 2300 packages in the stable and 2400 packages in the cooking version are available in the archives.

Versions

SliTaz is published in two versions: a stable (currently 4.0) and a Cooking version. Both are fully functional. SliTaz Cooking is a snapshot of the ongoing development of SliTaz. It is fully usable and allows testing of the latest implemented changes and applications.

In addition, the integrated Tazlito tool enables you to create your own modified Live CD, known as flavors .
