Openbox is a window manager for the X Window System .
The project started in 2002, originally based on the source code of Blackbox 0.65.0. For version 3, Openbox has been completely rewritten, but is still based on the look of Blackbox.
As a window manager, Openbox must be distinguished from full desktop environments ; it doesn't bring any panels or a file manager . The desktop environments LXDE and LXQt use Openbox as a window manager. Clicking the right mouse button opens a selection menu similar to that which most desktop environments make available when you click on the taskbar . With this fully configurable menu you can exit Openbox or start the programs organized into groups. In addition, so-called pipe menus and shell scripts can be used to create dynamic menus that are only generated at runtime.
Openbox is particularly characterized by its low hardware requirements. It is therefore also suitable for use on low-performance computers. The configuration of the window manager using XML files is unusual . ICCCM and EWMH are also supported, as is working with multiple monitors at the same time by Xinerama .
To configure Openbox using a graphical user interface, there is the ObConf (Openbox Configuration Manager) utility program and its Qt -based further development ObConf-Qt , which is used by LXQt as standard.
