Blackbox is a window manager for the X Window System in Unix-like operating systems . The software is programmed in the programming language C ++ and is characterized by its compact program size.

Blackbox needs little memory and runs quickly. In particular, it is worth installing on low-performance computers on which the window managers from KDE ( KWin ) or Gnome ( Metacity ) can no longer be used productively.

Blackbox offers in the standard installation

  • Window management,
  • Themes (styles),
  • Menus,
  • a dock (slit),
  • a toolbar and
  • the desktop background.

This manageable set of features is also wanted by the developers in order to keep Blackbox compact and clear. The window manager is compatible with the NetWM and EWMH standards, users can set up their desktop individually with additional programs:

  • Graphic tools enable the configuration of black boxes without a text editor.
  • Keyboard combinations are processed by the hotkey program bbkeys ,
  • So-called dock apps, small programs, enrich the otherwise empty dock with a variety of functions.
  • KDE or GNOME programs can also be used with Blackbox.
