LXQt is a free desktop environment for Unix and other POSIX- compliant platforms such as Linux or BSD . LXQt is a port from LXDE to the GUI toolkit Qt and, according to the developers, its future direction. LXQt has replaced LXDE in Lubuntu from version 18.10.

history

At the end of July 2011, the GUI toolkit GTK + 3 was introduced, which was declared the successor to GTK + 2, but at the same time is not downwardly compatible with GTK + 2. The introduction of GTK + 3 had already been worked towards months before. For the chief developer of the LXDE project, Hong Jen Yee, the question arose as to which toolkit the LXDE team wanted to use in the future, since until then LXDE was based on the GTK + 2 widget set, which should no longer be further developed. Yee stated in a blog article that GTK + 3 was “more memory-intensive and slower” than GTK + 2, which contradicted his project concept of a “lean, resource-efficient” desktop environment .

He announced a Qt version of LXDE, scheduled for completion in early July 2013. Jerôme Leclanche, a major developer of the Razor-qt desktop environment , and Yee decided to merge the Qt version of LXDE and Razor-qt. The previous LXDE code, which was based on GTK + 2, should be waited for a while, according to the decision. This task was delegated to a specially appointed maintainer .

In May 2014 a first version (0.7.0) of the Qt-based LXDE, now called "LXQt", was released. It was developed in collaboration with the Maui Project. In addition to the source code , packages are offered for Debian , Fedora , openSUSE , Arch Linux and Ubuntu , among others .

Version 0.8.0 brought full compatibility with Qt5 . For this purpose, new libraries of the KDE frameworks were integrated in order to replace previous self-programmed libraries with fewer functions. The new lxqt-admin contains admin tools, for example for configuring the date and time and for managing users and groups. The screen is now adjusted with lxqt-config-monitor instead of lxqt-config-randr . The file manager PCManFM -Qt and the LXQt panel have been improved. Newer versions only use Qt 5, which is also used in KDE 5.x.

LXQt components

Like LXDE or Xfce , LXQt has a modular structure. The following components are available:

  • compton-conf - configuration of the Compton composite manager
  • lximage-qt - image viewer
  • lxqt-about - information about LXQt
  • lxqt-admin - system administration
  • lxqt-config - Settings and Control Panel
  • lxqt-globalkeys - keyboard shortcuts
  • lxqt-l10n - translations
  • lxqt-notificationd - desktop notifications
  • lxqt-openssh-askpass - Password agent for SSH
  • lxqt-panel - desktop panel
  • lxqt-policykit - PolicyKit -Agent
  • lxqt-powermanagement - energy management
  • lxqt-qtplugin - Qt integration
  • lxqt-runner - program starter
  • lxqt-session - session manager
  • lxqt-sudo - Frontend for sudo / su
  • lxqt-themes - icons and themes
  • obconf-qt - Openbox configuration
  • pavucontrol-qt - mixer for PulseAudio
  • PCManFM-Qt - file manager
  • qps - process manager
  • qterminal - terminal emulator
  • screengrab - screen capture program

Window manager

LXQt does not bring a window manager itself , but works together with others. If a window manager is already installed, LXQt uses it automatically. The window manager can be changed via the settings. You will then need to log in again to activate it. Openbox is recommended because it requires few resources to match the desktop .

System requirements

LXQt requires a little more working memory (RAM) than its predecessor LXDE . Therefore, the following also applies here: less than 512 MiB RAM is not recommended, in practice it can be significantly more. The hardware requirements are thus roughly on par with Xfce or slightly above. Like MATE , LXQt ranks in the middle when it comes to the required system resources.
