Parabola GNU / Linux-libre is an Arch Linux- based Linux distribution developed for the i686 , x86-64 and arm7 architectures . The latter is based on Arch Linux ARM , but contains only free software . Instead of the generic Linux kernel has the distribution of the Linux-libre - kernel together with the GNU packages. The developers concentrate on simplicity, the involvement of the user, as well as being able to use the latest free software. Parabola GNU / Linux-libre is listed by the FSF as a completely free operating system .

Furthermore, it is a rolling release distribution , which means that a system update is sufficient to receive the latest software packages.

history

Parabola was originally proposed in 2009 by members of the IRC channel gNewSense . Members of various Arch Linux communities, especially Spanish speakers, have finally taken on the development, maintenance and documentation of Parabola GNU / Linux-libre.

Parabola has provided a MIPS port in the past to support the Chinese Loongson processor . This porting was discontinued due to a lack of developers. The last commit took place in July 2014.

On May 20, 2011, Parabola Distribution was declared a completely free GNU software project by being included in the list of completely free operating systems by the Foundation for Free Software .

In February 2012, Dimitrij D. Czarkoff tested Parabola for OSNews . He had to struggle with hardware problems with his test device - because there was no free firmware . From this he concluded that some devices were basically not supported by Parabola. He also criticized the lack of documentation that he found. Finally, he pointed out an identical user experience that he knew from Arch Linux . If Czarkoff's hardware would allow it, he would stick to Parabola - partly because of the selection of free software.

Repository security

Parabolas Package Management Pacman did not support any signed program packages up to version 4.0.0 . Signed packages and their metadata were therefore not verified during the installation process. Manipulated or dangerous package sources can endanger the integrity of a system. Pacman 4 made it possible to verify the package sources, which is why every package has been signed since April 2012.

mascot

Parabolas official mascots GNU and Bola

Parabola's artist created a GNU mascot in May 2015. Referring to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza , in March 2016 they added Bola, a cat, which is supposed to represent the main characteristics of the Linux distribution: elegant, minimalist and light. Bola means "ball" in Portuguese and is part of the name Para "Bola".

Differences to Arch Linux and Arch Linux ARM

The project uses only free software from the official Arch Linux repositories for the i686 and x86-64 architectures . This does not apply to the package sources [alarm] and [aur] of the arm7 architecture. If possible, proprietary software is replaced by free versions. For example, the free is Linux-libre kernel instead of the generic Linux kernel in Parabola use.

Around 700 software packages were filtered out of the package sources for the respective architecture in order to meet the requirements of the Foundation for Free Software .

Social contract

Parabola follows a specially drawn up social contract, which declares the project as support for the free software movement , advocates free software and democracy, or rejects proprietary software and decisions regarding the project of individuals. Since Parabola is a free version of Arch Linux , there is an additional support for its philosophy of simplicity. Furthermore, the guidelines for free system distributions of GNU are noted in the contract , which Parabola qualifies as a free distribution.

Talking Parabola

TalkingParabola is a version of Parabola based on TalkingArch . It is a Parabola installation medium , including speech and Braille output for the blind and other visually impaired users. TalkingParabola includes all packages of the conventional version. In addition, special packages are preinstalled, which make it possible for the visually impaired to install Parabola and then use it.

installation

There are two ways to install Parabola GNU / Linux-libre. On the one hand, Live ISO files are made available. On the other hand , the package sources can be adjusted to Parabola on an Arch Linux that is already installed .
