Loongson
Loongson ( Chinese 龙芯 - " Dragon Core ", hence also known as Dragon Core ) is the name of a CPU developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences . The developer versions of this processor are called Godson .
Several generations of the processor have appeared since 2002, and since 2007 there has been a cooperation with STMicroelectronics through worldwide sales.
The instruction set of the Loongson processor is MIPS compatible. Operating systems such as Linux , NetBSD , OpenBSD and Windows CE , but not Windows , can therefore run on this processor.
The four-core Loongson 3A processor , model "ICT Loongson-3A V0.5 FPU V0.1", supports DDR3-SDRAM and USB in version 2.0, is about as fast as a two-core Pentium-4 processor with 2-3 GHz but only an electrical output of 15 watts.
The fastest model that can be purchased is the 8-core "Loongson 3B" processor, manufactured in 65 nm and equipped with a 256-bit vector SIMD unit per core. There are no manufacturer-independent test results for this model yet. However, according to the manufacturer, this should accomplish 172.8 G FLOPS (billions of floating point calculations per second) with double precision. The electrical power should be around 40 watts.
A special feature of the latest generation of Loongson CPUs is the ability of hardware-assisted x86 emulation . 5% of the chip area is used to support 200 commands, which accelerate the emulation so that when using the QEMU emulator, an average of 70% of the native performance is achieved. The Loongson 3A can accelerate the following Intel -specific commands via hardware: Integer- x86 , FPU- x87 , MMX , SSE 1 and SSE2 .
The performance per watt is relatively good. Measured with the SPEC-CPU2000 benchmark , a Loongson 3A scores 788 points at an average of ~ 9.26 watts. Compared to a Phenom II X4 955BE, which has a power dissipation of 125 watts, and scores 2797 points at the top, the processing power per watt is more than twice as high.
