Slax (formerly Slackware Live CD ) is a GNU / Linux distribution that can be started as a live CD directly from a CD . The 200  MB large ISO image so it will fit on a CD mini . There is also a Slax version of the same size in TAR format that can be installed on a USB stick in just a few steps . This Slax version for USB sticks - in contrast to most other live USB systems - saves all changes; it therefore behaves like a normally installed operating system.

Slax was originally based on Slackware , since November 2017 on Debian .

Unlike the Knoppix- based live distributions, Slax uses a modular concept. The modules contain one or more program packages. Optional modules can be added to the Slax system and the functionality of the system can be expanded. This concept allows easy adaptation to your own needs. The modules are created with the help of the scripts from Linux-Live.org, whereby Slax was the first distribution to use this concept; other live distributions now also use it.
