Looking Glass is a 3D - user interface provided by Sun Microsystems was developed under the GNU General Public License is available (GPL). The project wanted to develop new ways of interacting with a desktop environment and saw itself as a technical advance development for future user interfaces. The extensive use of a three-dimensional desktop allows, for example, notes on web pages to be made on the back of the browser window. Looking Glass is an open source project and is being developed for GNU / Linux and Solaris . It uses and extends Java 3D .

A 3D surface is generally expected as the desktop of the future. Microsoft developed from version Vista operating system Windows provides limited 3D surface, as well as part of the Xgl - or AIGLX exists -project for Linux. The Apple operating system Mac OS X also provides comparable limited 3D capacities .

In contrast to the projects mentioned, the 3D possibilities with Looking Glass are much more extensive. In this way, the user can rotate and place the program window at any angle. The desktop surface is comparable to the surface of a roller, which the user can turn at will. This is intended to significantly expand the desktop surface without losing clarity.

Looking Glass is based on Java and can therefore be used on various operating systems such as Linux , Solaris and Microsoft Windows .

On September 18, 2009, the original author of the project, Hideya Kawahara, posted a note on the Java forum announcing that the project had been dormant since late 2006.

Live CD

There is also an English-language Live CD from Looking Glass so that you can try out the system without installation. It is based on the Linux distribution Slax and version 3.0 has been available since January 4, 2007. However, the hard drive installation is at an experimental stage.
