BasicLinux (alternatively also BasLin , BasLinux or BL3 ) is a minimalist Linux distribution in English, which is intended especially for extremely old systems ( 386 and 486 ) with the usual amount of RAM at the time .

The system, which uses the Linux kernel 2.2.26, can be used with as little as 3 MB RAM without a graphical user interface  - modern, full-fledged Linux systems need about 10 times as much.

The system itself is only 21.5 MB in size, with BusyBox and various command line-based programs such as the Mutt mail client being used. BasicLinux can also reside on the same partition as a Windows operating system. Another variant starts from two floppy disks, but requires more memory (12 MB). As a modification of Slackware 4.0, packages can be installed from it under BasicLinux.
