LinuxPPC was a Linux distribution for your computer with a PowerPC - processor (PPC) such as the Apple - Macintosh Computers from G3 processor or IBM - RS / 6000 - Workstation . A few years before and shortly after the turn of the millennium , LinuxPPC was popular among Macintosh users because it did not have many of the limitations of classic Mac OS (up to Mac OS 9.2.2 ) and ran significantly faster on Macintosh hardware than Apple's native operating system. LinuxPPC should not be confused with the porting of the Linux kernel to the PowerPC processor, which was then called Linux / PPC  - with a slash  .

history

The first LinuxPPC CD-ROMs were sold to developers and other interested parties in 1996 . LinuxPPC was based on Red Hat Linux and the Linux kernel port Linux / PPC. Many parts of the system were taken over from Red Hat Linux without any major changes. Version R4, released in June 1998, was very successful because it was the only Linux distribution alongside Yellow Dog Linux that could be easily installed on Macintosh computers. After version 4.1, versions 5.0 and 5.5 followed in 1999.

LinuxPPC 2000

On November 9, 2000, LinuxPPC Inc. presented version 6.0 of its distribution of the same name. For the first time it contained various optimizations of the installation and surface compared to Red Hat Linux, which is why this release was called LinuxPPC 2000 . LinuxPPC 2000 was based on Red Hat Linux 6.2. The installation program installed Gnome as a desktop. But it was possible to import KDE from the CD-ROM afterwards . In addition to the bootable CD-ROM with the compiled RPM packages of the distribution on it, there was also a second CD-ROM that contained all the source code packages. Alternatively, a very large (170 MB) image for the time could be downloaded from the Internet for free. This image contained the LinuxPPC 2000 lite demo version and also offered a live system .

The end of LinuxPPC

The last version of LinuxPPC was 6.0. Up until the beginning of 2003 updates for LinuxPPC 2000 were offered. In May 2003 LinuxPPC Inc. was dissolved and all development work was discontinued. Since the PPC platform was supported by various other distributions from around 2004, there were numerous at least equal successors for LinuxPPC.
