Manjaro [ manʃɑːro ] is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that is being developed in Germany, France and Austria. It is primarily a free operating system for personal computers that is geared towards user - friendliness . Like its base, Arch Linux, it uses a rolling release model.
particularities
With its own installation program and a graphical front end for package management, it is aimed at both beginners and advanced users.
The developers offer different editions, which differ in the installed desktop environment and associated programs. Xfce , KDE and Gnome are provided as standard interfaces , but projects for Manjaro users also include editions with Cinnamon , Enlightenment , LXDE , MATE , Openbox , the Deepin Desktop Environment or the minimal Net Edition (without a pre-installed display manager) available for download as an installation medium (DVD image). Manjaro Linux uses its own package repositories which are used to offer stable versions of the Arch Linux repositories. The packages go through the "unstable" and "testing" branches before they are released as a stable version. As a user, you always have the option of switching between the three different branches. The user can thus decide for himself how important it is to be up to date or stable.
The installation program Calamares offers both automatic and manual hard disk partitioning, as well as hardware detection, e.g. B. for graphics cards, and can automatically install required drivers. An installed Manjaro Linux is kept up-to-date via rolling releases with the package manager alone, without reinstallation or system upgrade. With Octopi ( Qt ) and Pamac ( GTK + ), Manjaro offers its own front ends for the Arch Linux package manager Pacman - packages from the Arch User Repository (AUR) can also be configured accordingly .
Another innovation in Manjaro 18.1 is the built-in support for Flatpak and Snap packages. The graphical package management tool "bauh" (previously called "fpakman") is available to users for this purpose.
The systemd program is used for the init process of system initialization of the operating system, which enables the computer to start up quickly.
distribution
For 2016 SourceForge counted around 130,000 downloads of the release images per month on average. Manjaro was featured on the cover discs of issues 167 and 172 of the English magazine Linux Format . Manjaro is number one of the most popular Linux distributions of 2018 on DistroWatch .
criticism
In a blog post, Keith Curtis criticizes the fact that the Arch repositories are duplicated for minor changes to the code and suggests that users should be allowed to use the Arch repositories in order to avoid a lock-in effect . Your own wiki pages could also find a place in the Arch-Wiki. Allan McRae, who u. a. pacman maintains for Arch Linux , praises the faster update strategy for security gaps since the end of 2014.
Publication table
From version 0.8.0 each version has its own code name. The code names follow the alphabet, but their origin cannot always be clearly assigned, even if some names are derived from celestial bodies.

- Cinnamon Edition
- Deepin Edition
- Enlightenment Edition
- Fluxbox Edition
- I3 edition
- LXDE / LXqt Edition
- MATE Edition
- OpenBox Edition
- OpenRC Edition
- PekWM Edition
For example, OpenRC was started in June 2014 as a Community Edition by Manjaro with the aim of doing without systemd . ConsoleKit2 is used instead of logind and eudev instead of systemd-udev; some systemd libraries are bundled in the eudev-systemdcompat package.
Since July 2017, Manjaro OpenRC no longer exists in this form, but is being further developed as a fork by ArchLinux under the name Artix Linux .
In addition, we are working on ARM-based operating systems with Manjaro ARM and Manjaro Phosh (smartphone).
Derivatives
Artix
Artix is a distribution that grew out of Manjaro OpenRC. It is based on openRC init and not systemd , which is the case by default in Manjaro and the higher-level Arch Linux.
Netrunner Rolling
Netrunner Rolling is a distribution distributed by the German software company Blue Systems . Snapshots have been available for installation since 2014. On October 13, 2019, the makers of this project announced that they would no longer pursue it, but would work directly on Manjaro Linux.
Sonar GNU / Linux
The Sonar GNU / Linux project aims to provide an accessible distribution; the two desktops Gnome and Mate are supported. The first version was published in February 2015, the current and final version was published in 2016.
