Emmabuntüs is a Linux distribution derived from Ubuntu and now Debian , the approach of which is to simplify, so that it can also be used on older computers.
The name Emmabuntüs is a combination of Emmaus and Ubuntu . The distribution was developed to redesign computers that have been donated to charities, such as the Emmaus movements ( French: Emmaüs ) around which it was created.
Characteristics
- Emmabuntüs can be installed without an Internet connection because all the necessary packages are contained in the memory image.
- 1 GB RAM is required for Emmabuntüs 2 Live mode .
- A full installation requires 512 MB (32-bit) or 1 GB (64-bit) of RAM .
- An installation script performs the basic installation steps automatically (e.g. user name, predefined password).
- The memory dump contains packages for many languages and some optional proprietary codecs. The installation script makes it possible to choose whether to install the proprietary software and whether to uninstall languages that are not used in order to reduce the number of updates later.
- Preconfigured protection of minors - plug-ins for the browser (from version 2).
- Three docks are available, "Children", "Beginner" and "Everyone", to facilitate access to the applications.
Desktop environment
The desktop environment is Xfce with Cairo-Dock. LXDE is also included and can be optionally installed.

History, Concerns, Dissemination, and Respect
The distribution was developed in 2010 in the vicinity of the Emmaüs Neuilly-Plaisance branch not far from Paris. Here donated old computers are refurbished. The project combines social concerns with resource conservation. The goals of the configuration are a simple operating system for beginners (also in the Linux world) and for less powerful outdated computer models. Since these are often provided without a hard drive, the installation routine contains all the software required, so it does not need a functioning Internet connection. This is what distinguishes Emmabuntüs from other lean distributions, where the focus is usually on a minimal initial installation package. In addition, an intuitive user interface with docks, which is not yet included in the Xubuntu standard versions, is preconfigured. In order to overcome the isolation of the open source scene from the commercial providers, the distribution wants to leave it to the user to stick to free software or to use proprietary packages ("fair for the choice").
Thanks to cooperation with organizations such as Les Amis de la Terre ( Friends of the Earth network), the developers have also been working with the Jerry Do-It-Together (Jerry DIT) project since 2012 . These produce the simplest recycling computers, for example with a plastic canister as a housing. In addition to France, the Jerry DIT group is particularly active in African countries such as Algeria , Benin , Côte d'Ivoire , Togo or Chad to break the poverty trap of poor education due to lack of access to new technologies by encouraging initiative. Jerry computers with an Emmabuntüs operating system are used, for example, in the health system of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
Another concern is a well-preinstalled child safety configuration to facilitate use in schools, for example, so that the supervisors there do not need special prior knowledge of computer administration.
The distribution has been around 100th on the Distrowatch list since 2013 .
