TuxGuitar is a free music notation and sequencer program for creating, viewing and playing tablatures . The program is written in Java and is distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License . It is similar in many ways to the commercial tablature editor Guitar Pro .

TuxGuitar is available for the Windows , macOS , Linux and FreeBSD operating systems as well as source code . In many Linux distributions , such as Ubuntu and Debian , TuxGuitar is included in the package sources. The first version of TuxGuitar was released on December 22, 2005. The program has now been localized in various languages.

With TuxGuitar Live there is also an implementation as a Java applet , which can be used directly in the browser without installation.

Functions

The program is intended to enable guitarists and other musicians to record, manage and play individual pieces. The pieces can be presented either in the form of tablatures or as notation . It is suitable both for composing music and as a practice program for guitarists, as they can play along while the pieces are being played. For this purpose, it is possible to adjust the playback speed and have a metronome run along with the playback . In addition, the program includes an editor for chords and an editor for drums - Patterns . A function for displaying the played notes on a fingerboard or a keyboard makes it easier to find the correct fingering positions. Various scales can also be displayed.

Multiple tracks for different instruments are supported that can be played back at the same time. Playback via an integrated MIDI - sequencer ; Either an internal or an external software synthesizer such as Timidity ++ or FluidSynth is used for sound reproduction , and a MIDI sound card can also be used directly . The tools available are only limited by the method used. By using MIDI hardware or software synthesizers and adapted SoundFonts , the playback quality can be improved compared to the integrated synthesizer.

TuxGuitar can display and play back many effects that are relevant to guitar playing (such as palm mute , bending , hammer-on / pull-off , slide , vibrato and accents ). As of version 1.1, each instrument track can contain two voices, so that instruments such as the accordion or piano that are played with both hands can be notated in one track. In version 1.2 a function for transposing individual tracks or the entire piece of music was added.

TuxGuitar uses its own file format; however, Guitar Pro, Power Tab, and TablEdit file formats are also supported. It is also possible to export the pieces of music as ASCII tablatures, as MIDI files, in the MusicXML format, as PDF files or as source text for LilyPond . There are currently over 900,000 files in Guitar Pro and Power Tab format on the Internet that can be used with TuxGuitar.
