Guitar Pro is a music notation program in which music can be represented both in note form and as guitar tablature . It is produced by the French software manufacturer Arobas Music .

Up to version 4 the program was only available for Microsoft Windows . Guitar Pro 5, released for Windows in November 2005, was also available for Mac OS in July 2006 . The sixth version published in 2010 was also available for Linux . With Version 7, released in 2017, support for Linux was removed again.

options

Guitar Pro is popular with guitarists and other musicians as it is suitable for practicing and playing along with guitar tablatures as well as for transcribing and composing.

Presentation of notes and tabs

The soundtracks are displayed both as traditional notes and as tablature. For non-stringed instruments, especially for classical instruments, the program offers the option to hide the tablature and only display the notation.

Audio playback

The program can play guitar-typical playing techniques such. B. Palm mute and hammer-on and effects such as distortion , phaser and reverb acoustically by using MIDI or the internal Real Sound Engine ( RSE ). The RSE sounds have been included as a library of the software since version 5 and are called up by a software-internal sampler during playback.

File formats

There are over 800,000 documents in Guitar Pro format on the Internet, available from various Internet sites , although many sites have had to close their doors due to pressure from the rights holder Music Publishers' Association (MPA).

For versions 1 and 2 the file format was called GTP . From version 3 the format was further developed, the ending was suitable for the versions GP3 , GP4 and GP5 . With version 6, the file format was fundamentally changed due to the stronger integration of the so-called RSE (Realistic Sound Engine), the ending is called GPX . There is backward compatibility between the formats , which means that the newer Guitar Pro versions are able to work with earlier formats.

Conversion

As of version 3, the latest version after the decimal point can convert a file into the previous format , i.e. .gpx to .gp5 , .gp5 to .gp4 etc.

From version 4 it is possible to convert a file into various formats such as MIDI , MusicXML , Wave , ASCII or PDF . This means that Guitar Pro files can also be edited by other programs in sheet music or audio form.

RSE

The Realistic Sound Engine is a guitar, bass - and percussion - Sampler , which when playing the notes a transparent allows sound impression. It has been used to play files since Guitar Pro 5. While the first version of RSE only included a few sound samples, the second, which is included in Guitar Pro 6, has been equipped with many new samples, effects and amplifier simulations.

In GuitarPro 6, in contrast to the previous version, it is no longer possible to play midi and RSE at the same time, but only separately. To compensate for the missing midi instruments, sound samples were also created for these so that the use of a midi sound sampler is no longer necessary.
