The Compañía Española de Minas del Rif SA (CEMR) was a public limited company that was founded in Spain to exploit iron ore in the Protectorate of Spanish Morocco .

CEMR shares could be acquired from July 21, 1908. The primary corporate objective was the exploitation of iron ore deposits in the Uixán and Axara mountains, which were located in the Beni-bu-Ifrur massif and in the Guelaya region of today 's Nador province . The mine was 15 km southeast of Nador and 28 km from the port of Melilla .

history

The corporation had signed an agreement with Muley Mohamet, an alleged caliph, also known as Bou Hamara , to develop and use the local mines. Bou Hamara was kidnapped on August 8th by the most powerful Berber tribe in the region, the Banu Waryaghal (Aith Waryaghar in the Berber language). As a result, the armed conflict around Melilla developed in 1909 .

In the Protectorate of Spanish Morocco , the Office of Jalifa was set up as a contact for the Compañía Española de Minas del Rif . This office was last held by Muley el Hassán ben el Mehdi , who died in 1984.

In 1924 new installations for loading / unloading the mineral were inaugurated. In 1927 ore exports reached 710,678 tons, but with the Great Depression of 1929 demand dropped to 146,500 tons. In 1935 exports recovered to 900,000 tons. The company was active until 1969, changes its name and activities to ETSA. A Moroccan mining company, SEFERIF, took over the ore transport and used the installations in Melilla until July 1980. In 1982 the remaining installations in Melilla, Spain, were finally abandoned.
