uBlock Origin

Origin ublock is a free , cross-platform web browser - Plug-in filtering tools such as, inter alia, for example, advertising , web tracking or Malvertising . It is a further development of the now discontinued uBlock (formerly µBlock). uBlock Origin is available for different browsers such as different versions of Mozilla Firefox , Google Chrome , Opera , Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari .

Development history

uBlock

Logo from uBlock

uBlock was developed in 2014 by Raymond Hill on the code base of HTTP Switchboard . In April 2015, Hill handed over development to Chris Aljoudi. uBlock was only sporadically developed from August 2015 to March 2018.

In June 2018, the uBlock.org website was taken over by the AdBlock team . It was announced that uBlock would see changes in the next few months.

uBlock Origin

Raymond Hill, the original developer of uBlock, began developing a spin-off from uBlock called uBlock Origin with a slightly different set of functions shortly after handing in the project on April 1, 2015 . New features include privacy protection and the ability to synchronize settings and filter rules between different computers using the synchronization services provided by some browsers, such as Firefox Sync . The first release as uBlock Origin took place on April 11, 2015. Initially, the spelling “uBlock₀” was also chosen, with the subscript zero symbolizing the “O” of “Origin”.

Range of functions

uBlock Origin supports the filter syntax of the widely used ad blocker Adblock Plus . This means that the same filter lists can be used. However, there is no predefined display of so-called acceptable ads via whitelist . In the standard installation, filter lists for blocking advertising, web tracking and websites with malware are activated.

Compared to Adblock Plus, uBlock Origin and its predecessor uBlock, according to our own analysis, require significantly less memory and CPU cycles with a comparable range of functions.

reception

Due to the higher efficiency of ublock developers gave Adblock Edge , a popular Adblock Plus - Fork , known in the spring of 2015 to stop their project.

uBlock Origin was named “Addon of the Month” for May 2016 by Mozilla. Since then uBlock Origin has been one of 94 out of around half a million selected or particularly recommended extensions for Firefox and, based on the number of users, ranks first out of over 2000 extensions Data protection and security.

The Chrome version had over 6 million daily users at the end of 2016 and the Firefox version more than 2 million daily users. According to a comScore analysis , uBlock Origin was the fastest growing ad blocker between November 2014 and August 2015, with a growth rate of over 800%. This was in part attributed to users' preference for an ad blocker without acceptable ads .

In a security advisor, the SWR recommended the use of the uBlock Origin extension, as this can also block websites with malicious programs through appropriately preset filter lists.

In September 2017, Stiftung Warentest examined the ten most popular programs for blocking online trackers . Warentest had the "best experiences" with uBlock Origin, which successfully blocks 77 percent of all online trackers and is easy to use.
